Medicine :: Rheumatology

UT Medical Group, Inc.'s Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine is comprised of physicians on the faculty of the University Of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis who offer both clinical and consultation services and are certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Rheumatology is the study of diseases characterized by pain and/or inflammation in the muscles, joints, or fibrous tissue.  Rheumatic disease includes arthritis (infectious arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, etc.), back pain, bursitis, lupus, fibromyalgia, metabolic bone disease, soft tissue disorders, connective tissue diseases, and vasculitis.

Rheumatologists are internists or pediatricians who have additional training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and many other musculoskeletal diseases. Since rheumatic disorders are often chronic, Rheumatologists work with patients over a period of time to help them cope with the changes these diseases have caused. They also work with other UTMG doctors to conduct research and interact on ways to better help patients.
