Dr. Atul Madan has received the 2007 Young Researcher Award from the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Madan is co-medical director of the bariatric program at UT Medical Group Inc. and associate professor and chief of the minimally invasive surgery section in the department of surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

The annual award is intended to encourage young surgeons to continue their interest and investigation in minimal access surgery. It is presented for excellence in endoscopic surgical research to a SAGES member who is in surgical training or who, like Madan, has completed training in the last five years. The selection is based on research submitted to SAGES, evidence of current and previous research, and demonstrated participation in the SAGES organization.
