Steven H. Burkett – President & CEO

Steven H. Burkett has served as president and chief executive officer of UT Medical Group, Inc. since 1994.

A native Arkansan, Burkett graduated from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in pre-med biology-psychology. He completed his post-graduate education at Memphis State University (now University of Memphis), where he received master’s degrees in health education (1976) and public administration, health services (1980).

Burkett has a broad background in academic medical practice and administration, including 25 years’ affiliation with UT Medical Group and the University of Tennessee. Prior to his appointment as president and CEO, he served as director of the UT Medical Center, Memphis and president of the University Physicians Foundation, Inc., the forerunner to UT Medical Group. He was also business manager for the Department of OB/GYN and Neonatology and the Department of Pediatrics.

From 1982-1984, Burkett was administrator for the University Physicians Group at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

For the past 10 years, Burkett has served as adjunct instructor for the Graduate Program in Health Services Administration at the University of Memphis. His publications include “Practice Management Courses for Residents: A Contribution to Education” and “Microcomputer Applications in Academic Medicine.” Burkett makes frequent presentations to health care associations and other professional organizations regarding various aspects of the health care industry.

He also serves as chairman of the board for Memphis Managed Care Corporation, a TennCare health maintenance organization based in Memphis, which is jointly owned by UT Medical Group and a local hospital.

Burkett is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), where he is a past chairman of the steering committee on the group on Faculty Practice. He is also an active member of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and is a past member of that organization’s board of directors.


Jeffrey R. Woodside, M.D. – Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Jeffrey R. Woodside was named executive vice president and chief medical officer for UTMG in 1999.

He received his undergraduate degree from Oregon State University and earned his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School, where he later interned. Following a stint as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy, he completed residencies in general surgery and urology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He also received an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix.

His career spans more than 25 years and includes faculty appointments at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque and the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, where he also served as vice president of The Hermann Hospital.

In 1992, Woodside was named UT Medical Group’s medical director, a position he held until 1995. He was also appointed medical director of UT Bowld Hospital and professor of urology at the UT Health Science Center. In 1993, he was named executive director of the UT Medical Center. He was appointed executive vice President and chief medical officer for UTMG and associate dean for clinical affairs for the university in 1999.

Woodside is active in many medical organizations and serves as a reviewer for various urology journals. He also serves on the editorial board for the journal, Editorial Board, Neurourology and Urodynamics.


Richard O. Baer – Chief Operating Officer

Richard O. Baer has served as UTMG’s chief operating office since 1994.

He earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from Duke University and a master’s in business administration, accounting, from the University of Chicago.

Baer has more than 20 years of experience in the health care field, working with hospital facilities as well as managed care and physician organizations.

From 1974-1978, he served on the administrative staff of Ohio State University Hospitals. He later joined University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, where he held the positions of assistant to the associate director and assistant director.

From 1984-1986, Baer was vice president, operations, for Rhode Island Group Health Association. He subsequently served seven years as vice president of clinical services for Concord Hospital.

Baer is a diplomate in the American College of Healthcare Executives and holds membership in the Medical Group Management Association and Mid-South Health Care Executives.


Brenda H. Jeter, Chief Financial Officer

Brenda H. Jeter has served as UTMG’s chief financial officer since 2002.

A native of Texas, she attended East Texas State University and was graduated cum laude from Memphis State University (now University of Memphis) with a bachelor of science degree in education.

After 10 years as an accounting and economics teacher at Memphis Catholic High School, Jeter earned her certification as a Certified Public Accountant. She worked in the public accounting field for several years before joining UT Medical Group in 1990 as assistant controller. She later became the organization’s vice president and controller and eventually held the position of vice president of revenue services.

Jeter currently serves on the boards of Memphis Managed Care Corporation and the UT Medical Group basic pension plan. She is a member of the American Institute of CPA’s, Medical Group Management Association, and Healthcare Financial Management Association.


Steve J. Schwab, M.D., Chair, Board of Directors

A nationwide search culminated in the appointment of Steve J. Schwab, MD, as the first executive dean of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine campuses. Serving as the most senior administrative leader for College of Medicine state-wide initiatives, such as the UT Cancer Institute and the UT Biodefense Network, Dr. Schwab will also work closely with the executive leadership of UTHSC’s affiliated teaching hospitals.

Prior to joining UTHSC, Dr. Schwab served as interim dean and chief clinical officer of the Medical College of Georgia where he was also a Regents Professor and chairman of the Department of Medicine.  Before that, from 1985 to 2003, he was at Duke University where he rose to become professor and vice chairman of medicine. He has held board positions in both the private and public sectors and currently serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation of Singapore and the National Renal Alliance.

Internationally recognized in the field of renal disease with more than 150 refereed publications and five books to his credit, he has presented his research nationally and across Europe and Asia. Attesting to his commitment to patient care is the fact that Dr. Schwab was selected for inclusion in Best Doctors in America and America’s Top Doctors for the past 12 years.
