Problems Associated with Childhood and adolescence

Children can experience mental health problems just like adults.

One of the more common childhood conditions is Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which is characterized by a child’s inability to concentrate, sit still, or listen. A child with ADHD often has difficulty learning because the symptoms are disruptive to the school environment. The condition affects boys more than girls. More than 70 percent of children diagnosed with ADHD can be treated successfully with proper medication.

Adolescence is a difficult time for children and parents alike, but sometimes problems occur that require professional help. One of the most alarming problems is suicide, which is the second leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 19 years. Signs to look for include depression, substance abuse, talking about death or suicide, withdrawal from friends and family, excessive anger, and a desire to give possessions away. Teens who experience these symptoms and who have experienced a recent loss--such as death of a loved one or friend, family divorce, a serious school problem, or the breakup of a relationship--are at particular risk. Adolescents who have previously tried to commit suicide are also at high risk. If you have thoughts of suicide or suspect a loved one is facing this problem, seek professional help immediately.
