Eating Disorders

These conditions are characterized by a distorted view of one’s body, an uncontrollable fear of gaining weight, and/or a preoccupation with food.

Often, the victim is a perfectionist with low self-esteem. Anorexia nervosa occurs when the patient diets or exercises so excessively that the body reaches a dangerously low weight.

Bulimia nervosa is a condition in which the patient gorges on food, then purges by forcing oneself to vomit or overusing laxatives. However, unlike anorexics, victims of bulimia are usually of normal weight or even somewhat overweight. The vast majority of patients with both eating disorders are female and between the ages of 12 and 25.
