Maternal/Fetal Medicine
UT Medical Group, Inc.'s division of Maternal/Fetal Medicine in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology includes Maternal/Fetal medicine specialists which is an obstetrician/gynecologist who has completed additional education and clinical experience within an American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) approved Maternal/Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program. Maternal/Fetal medicine specialists have advanced knowledge of the obstetrical, medical, genetic, and surgical complications of pregnancy and their effects on both the mother and fetus.
Here are a few reasons why a patient might be seen by Maternal/Fetal Medicine Specialists:
- Women undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures during pregnancy, such as:
1. Comprehensive ultrasound
2. Chorionic villus sampling
3. Genetic amniocentesis, fetal surgery or treatment
- Women with medical or surgical disorders, such as:
1. High blood pressure
2. Pre-eclampsia (toxemia)
3. Diabetes or other endocrine disorders
4. Kidney or gastrointestinal disease
5. Heart disease
6. Infectious diseases
- Healthy women whose pregnancy is at markedly increased risk for adverse outcome, such as:
1. Abnormal AFP (aplha fetoprotein) blood test
2. Twins, triplets or more
3. Recurrent pre-term labor and delivery
4. Premature rupture of membranes
5. Recurrent pregnancy loss
6. Suspected fetal growth restriction (baby not growing enough)
