UT Medical Group, Inc.'s department of Ophthalmology includes nationally and internationally renowned, board-certified physicians specializing in the study of the eye. Using advanced surgical and clinical techniques, they are trained to provide comprehensive eye care, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of eye disorders and diseases.
Whether you are considering laser eye surgery, are suffering from glaucoma or cataracts, or you simply require new glasses, a UT Medical Group ophthalmologist is prepared to care for you and your family.
The Difference Between Ophthalmology and Optometry
When selecting an eye care professional, the question "What is the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist?" is frequently asked. Both are commonly referred to as "eye doctors." However, while an optometrist has a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an optometry school, an ophthalmologist has attended medical school, acquiring a medical degree (MD).
In addition to a medical degree, ophthalmologists are required to complete a year or more of clinical training and at least three years in a residency program where he or she receives additional training in eye diagnosis and treatment. To practice a subspecialty (a more specific area) like pediatric ophthalmology, the ophthalmologist will train an additional year or more.
The ophthalmologists' additional education enables them to provide services beyond eye examinations and prescribing corrective lenses. The ophthalmologist also performs surgical procedures to manage or correct ocular disorders. Additionally, UT Medical Group's ophthalmologists are tested and certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
