- Cochlear Implants - Medical device that bypasses damaged structures in the inner ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve, allowing some deaf individuals to learn to hear and interpret sounds and speech. - NIDCD glossary
- Myringotomy is a surgically placed tiny incision in the eardrum. Any fluid, usually thickened secretions, will be removed. In most situations, a small plastic tube (a tympanostomy tube) will be inserted into the eardrum to keep the middle ear aerated for a prolonged period of time.
- Stapedectomy - In an operation for treatment of otosclerosis called a stapedectomy, a surgeon bypasses the diseased bone with a prosthetic device that allows sound waves to be passed to the inner ear.
