Pediatric Hospitalists at Le Bonheur
A New UT Medical Group Service
A new breed of doctor called a “hospitalist” is making it easier for hospitalized patients and their physicians to communicate. The result? Better coordination of care and better results for the patient.
What is a hospitalist?
A hospitalist is a doctor whose only job is to care for patients while they are in the hospital. The hospitalist stays in touch with the patient’s regular doctor and makes sure that he or she is updated regularly on the patient’s condition.
There are several benefits to a hospitalist program:
- The patient has more information about his or her own care because the hospitalist is available to answer questions on a daily basis.
- The hospitalist is available to see the patient daily and as needed.
- The patient is often able to go home earlier on the day of discharge because the hospitalist is on-site to sign any necessary discharge papers.
- The hospitalist is available to help coordinate any care needed for the patient after discharge from the hospital.
How the program works
The hospitalist program at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center is available to all doctors who admit patients there. Primary care physicians or pediatricians can ask for a hospitalist to coordinate their patients’ care while in the hospital. Patients and families are introduced to the hospitalist group on admission and see the hospitalist exclusively during their hospitalization. Once patients are discharged, they return to the pediatrician or other primary care provider for follow-up care.
Dr. Cynthia Cross is the Medical Director for the hospitalist program at Le Bonheur Children’s. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and has more than 10 years experience in hospital care. The hospitalist staff also includes pediatricians Dr. Yasir Alsaek, Dr. Patrick Randolph and Dr. Lakesha Tables.
