Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine
UT Medical Group, Inc.'s Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics is comprised of physicians on the faculty of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis who offer both clinical and consultation services and are certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in pediatrics and pediatric pulmonology.
Pulmonary Medicine deals with diseases of the lung and the respiratory (breathing) system. Diseases seen by specialists include cystic fibrosis, asthma, recurrent pneumonia, exercise problems and children with sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). ). The division helps direct the only accredited pediatric sleep disorders program in the area and provides follow-up care to infants and children who need home mechanical ventilation.
The University of Tennessee Cystic Fibrosis Care and Research Center is a comprehensive research and clinical center accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that provides care to 150 pediatric and adult patients with cystic fibrosis. In addition the Cystic Fibrosis Center is actively involved in translational and multicenter clinical research in cystic fibrosis.
The division uses a variety of tools for diagnosis and treatment of lung problems including sweat and genetic testing for cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary function testing of infants, children and adolescents. The infant pulmonary function lab is the only lab in the state of Tennessee using the latest infant testing technology. In addition, bronchoscopy and specialized pulmonary testing including exercise testing, methacholine challenge testing, allergy testing, and diagnostic testing for primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) are available.
