How long do you keep the records? Record Retention UT Medical Group follows the guidelines set forth by the Tennessee Medical Records Act for retention of medical records. The guidelines specify that medical records are to be retained and preserved for a minimum period of 10 years following the last date of treatment or such patient's death. In the case of patients under mental disability or minority, their records shall be retained for the period of minority (under 18 years of age), or known mental disability, plus one (1) year or ten (10) years, whichever is longer. Information in the medical record is the patient's but the physical record is the property of UTMG. |
