UT Medical Group Expands
Cardiac Testing and Treatment Options
Electrophysiologist Dr. Sunil K. Jha
Joins Department of Medicine
Memphis, Tennessee (March 29, 2010) — Dr. Sunil K. Jha has joined UT Medical Group Inc. to direct a clinic for adult patients with heart-related ailments, such as unexplained fainting, congestive heart failure, and irregular heartbeat.
“Dr. Jha is a board-certified cardiologist and electrophysiologist who brings the latest technologies for the treatment of arrhythmias, sudden death and heart failure to UTMG and the UT Health Science Center,” says Dr. Guy Reed, chairman of the department of medicine. “His addition to our staff enhances the spectrum of advanced cardiovascular services we provide to our community.”
Jha cares for patients at the Cardiac Pacing and Arrhythmia Services clinic, located at 1325 Eastmoreland Avenue in the Memphis medical center. The clinic offers a wide range of cardiac testing, including echocardiography, EKG, and cardiac event monitoring. Jha also performs electrophysiology (EP) studies, which document the heart’s electrical activity and help to pinpoint the source of a patient’s symptoms.
“Once the cause and the location of the problem are identified, the doctor can determine the most effective treatment,” says Jha. “Without treatment, many patients may be at risk for cardiac arrest and sudden death.”
Patients who suffer from unexplained fainting, or syncope, often need an EP study if tilt table and other cardiac tests do not show what is causing the symptoms. Individuals with cardiac arrhythmia may need an EP study to find out the source of their irregular heartbeat.
“If medication does not manage the arrhythmia, we may need to implant a defibrillator or pacemaker in the patient. In more severe cases of complex arrhythmia, we use a procedure called ‘ablation’ to burn the part of the heart muscle that is causing the arrhythmia.”
Jha is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with subspecialty certification in cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology, he was named among America’s Top Cardiologists in 2009. He is also assistant professor of cardiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
UT Medical Group is the private group practice affiliated with the UT Health Science Center College of Medicine faculty. A not-for-profit, non-tax-supported group practice, UTMG is dedicated to quality patient care, medical education, and medical research.
