Sling Provides Relief for Incontinence After Prostate Surgery
June 15-21 is National Men’s Health Week
A UT Medical Group urologist is the first physician in Tennessee and the southeastern U.S. to implant a new male sling that treats urinary incontinence in men following prostate surgery. Dr. Robert Wake performed the region’s first Coloplast VIRTUE™ sub-urethral sling implant earlier this year.
Many men suffer from mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence after prostate surgery. In most patients, the problem can be treated effectively with exercises and/or medications. However, up to five percent of patients need surgery to alleviate their symptoms.
Surgical treatment can include implanting an Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS). However, male slings offer a less invasive alternative for patients whose symptoms are not as severe. Slings help men control their bladder function by supporting the urethra. The new VIRTUE sling goes one step further by supporting and compressing the urethra. As a result, it offers more stability and greater bladder control.
The VIRTUE sling has a low complication rate and can generally be implanted in about 20 minutes. To learn more about the new sling, visit Coloplast Corporation. To make an appointment with Dr. Wake or another UTMG urologist, call 901-347-8350 (Germantown) or 901-259-2800 (Methodist South).
