FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 02/06/03 The Memphis area’s first laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery was performed in January by UT Medical Group’s minimally invasive surgeon Dr. Atul Madan. The patient left the hospital, after only three days, without any problems. Madan is UTMGs chief of minimally invasive surgery/section of general surgery and assistant professor of surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Although laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery has been performed previously elsewhere, this is the first time it has been done laparoscopically in the Memphis area, says Dr. Madan. The laparoscopic approach offers many advantages over more traditional open surgery, including a shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery time, and lower rate of wound complications. The procedure creates a small stomach to limit the amount of food that can be received and bypasses some of the intestine to limit the calories that are absorbed. Patients lose weight because their food intake and absorption is drastically reduced. Patients are typically in the hospital for two to three days. Dr. Madan says gastric bypass surgery is not for those people who only need to lose a few pounds. It is designed for morbidly obese patients who are often afflicted with other health problems such as diabetes and hypertension. The goal, he says, is to alleviate those medical problems by helping the patient to lose weight.
