Breast Cancer Still #2 Cause of Cancer Deaths in U.S. Women

Despite improvements in detection and treatment, statistics from the National Cancer Institute show that breast cancer continues to be the second leading cause of cancer deaths among American women.

Some factors that influence your risk of getting breast cancer are unavoidable, such as your age and family history.  However, Dr. Elizabeth Pritchard, a surgeon who specializes in breast cancer treatment, says you may be able to reduce your risk by taking these simple steps:
  • Maintain a healthy weight.  Obesity increases your risk of breast cancer, especially after menopause.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet, low in fat and rich in fruits and vegetables.  Studies have shown that beta-carotene (found in many vegetables) may reduce your cancer risk.
  • Exercise regularly, at least four hours a week.
  • Limit your alcohol intake.
  • Don’t smoke and minimize your exposure to second-hand smoke.
  • Have a clinical breast exam and mammogram as recommended for your age and risk. Remember, early detection increases your chance of beating cancer.

The National Cancer Institute has developed a free, online test that can help you determine your risk for developing breast cancer.  Discuss the results of your test with your doctor, and take charge of your health!
