UTMG teams with Gyrus Corp. to introduce new sound delivery system
Memphis is one of four U.S. sites chosen to debut a new sound delivery system marketed by Gyrus Corporation, a subsidiary of Memphis-based Smith-Nephew, Inc. UT Medical Group neurotologist Dr. Bruce MacDonald is the only Memphis physician offering the device, recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He successfully implanted two patients with the product last month.

The RetroX Hearing System is designed for adults who have trouble hearing high-frequency sounds, a condition which generally occurs in older individuals. It consists of a titanium tube that is surgically implanted behind the ear and connected to an adjustable, digital hearing aid. The device amplifies only those sounds in high-frequency ranges and does not interfere with a patients natural ability to hear other sounds.
The cost of the system is comparable to a high-end digital hearing aid. Dr. MacDonald estimates the device will help about 10 percent of patients who suffer from age-related hearing loss.
