Children with Cardiovascular Ailments Reap Rewards of New CICU, Top-Rated Echo Lab

UTMG’s pediatric cardiovascular program is having a red letter month with the opening of a new Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center and the recent accreditation of the pediatric echocardiography laboratory.

The new CICU will enable the cardiovascular team to provide the tiny patients with the specialized care they require in an environment designed just for them, says Dr. Antonio Cabrera, UTMG pediatric cardiologist and CICU Medical Director.
Located on the hospital’s second floor, the CICU is staffed by a team of pediatric intensivists, cardiac intensivists, cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac nurse practitioners, pediatric cardiac nurses and respiratory therapists. The unit features five large rooms, with plenty of space to accommodate the patients’ families and the large medical team who work in tandem on critical cases.

Also this month, the Cardiovascular Institute’s echocardiography lab recently became the first pediatric accredited laboratory in the state. In fact, it was the first accredited laboratory in the Kentucky-Arkansas-Mississippi region. The lab provides testing for infants and children with congenital heart defects and heart disease.

“An ultrasound is only as good as the person performing it. The ICAEL designation demonstrates that our team is committed to a level of consistent and excellent care,” says Dr. Vijay Joshi, Medical Director of Cardiovascular Services.

The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories ( ICAEL), accredited Le Bonheur’s transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograph services. ICAEL is an organization that has set the national standards for echocardiography labs, with a focus on the quality of physicians, sonographers, education, safety, structure and results.
