Surgeon Targets Pancreatic Cancer
November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year, and most of them will die from the disease.  Currently, there is no accurate diagnostic test to detect pancreatic cancer, and there may be no noticeable symptoms until the disease reaches an advanced stage.

UT Medical Group surgeon Dr. Stephen Behrman hopes to change those statistics through research and greater public awareness of the disease.  He also wants pancreatic cancer patients and their families to know that they are not alone.  With funding from the Herb Kosten Pancreatic Cancer Support Endowment, Dr. Behrman sponsors a support group for those affected by the disease. Quarterly meetings provide information on pancreatic cancer treatment, coping with the illness, and new research findings.   The group’s next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Germantown Community Library.
