It may not be on the school's "List of Supplies," but a back-to-school physical examination is just as important to your child's success as pencils and paper are. A well child who is in class every day is able to listen and learn. A child who misses school due to sickness can easily get behind in his or her studies. Fortunately, immunizations can protect your child against many infectious diseases and prevent their spread to others. "Immunization against infectious diseases is one of the most spectacular success stories in public health," says Dr. Andy Spooner, UT Medical Group director of general pediatrics. "But they only work well if a tremendous percentage of people take them." That's why school vaccinations are so important, he says. "Once your percentage of immunized individuals is very near 100 percent, the germ can no longer spread through the population. It cannot get a foothold." Be sure your child is ready for school.
