Monitor Diabetes To Protect Eyesight
November is Diabetic Eye Disease Month

Each year, up to 25,000 people lose their sight as a result of diabetes complications such as retinopathy and glaucoma. Yet only about half of diabetics get the recommended eye exam each year.

“Forty percent of diabetics over the age of 40 have some degree of diabetic retinopathy, and eight percent have retinal swelling and are at risk for vision loss,” says UT Medical Group ophthalmologist Dr. Edward Chaum.

Prevention and early detection are the keys to preserving vision. To lower your risk of diabetes-related eye disease, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the following:
  • Tightly control your blood sugar levels.
  • Monitor your blood pressure. If you have hypertension, make sure you follow your doctor’s instructions for keeping it under control.
  • Have a dilated eye examination each year.

If you experience any eye problems such as blurred vision or floating spots, contact your eye doctor as soon as possible.
