Can You Hear Me Now?
Do you constantly ask people to “speak up”? Do you have trouble understanding what people say when you’re at a party? If so, you’re not alone. About 30 million Americans suffer from hearing loss.
Hearing loss can be caused by many factors, says UTMG neurotologist Dr. Bruce MacDonald. Excessive exposure to noise, certain medications and diseases, heredity, and the aging process can all contribute to hearing loss. In children, ear infections are the number one cause of hearing impairment.
If you think you may have a hearing problem, contact your health care provider for a hearing screening. And take steps now to protect your ears from further impairment. Use ear protective devices, such as earplugs, when you are exposed to excessive noise levels like lawnmowers and vacuum cleaners.
