Growth and Development - Adolescent (Teenager) (12 - 18 years)

During adolescence, your teenager will experience many physical and emotional changes. He or she will want to spend more time with friends than family, and will begin to develop more boy/girl relationships.

Your teenager will begin to think more independently, and establish a self-identity, which may create conflict in your family. It is at this time your teenager will begin forming values.

As a parent of a teenager, you can:

  • Talk to your teen about physical and emotional changes.
  • Discuss topics like values, beliefs, and sexuality with your teen.
  • Give your teen consistent discipline.
  • Allow your teen to have more independence as he or she shows the maturity to handle it.
  • Try to provide a secure, stable home environment.
  • Praise your teen when he or she does well.
  • Be a good role model.
  • Stay involved with your teen's education.
  • Give your teen chances to learn about different types of jobs to help with the choice of career or school.

Safety tips:

  • Insist that your teen always use a seat belt.
  • Insist that your teen wears a helmet when cycling or skating.
  • Have your teen use protective gear when playing sports.
  • Have your teen take a driver's education course.
  • Have your teen take swimming lessons and/or a lifesaver's course.
  • Have your teen take First Aid and CPR courses.
  • Insist that your teen have a set curfew.
  • Teach your teen responsibility for his or her actions.
