Circumcision

A baby that has been circumcised may feel discomfort for a day or two. The baby may be fussy and cry more than usual.

If your child has a plastic rim:

The skin around the plastic rim will become dark brown or black. This is normal. The color will go away when the rim drops off in 5 - 10 days. Do not pull off the plastic rim.

You may see a few drops of blood in his diaper the first day. This is normal.

If your child does not have a plastic rim:

The penis should heal in 3 - 5 days.

You may see a few drops of blood in his diaper the first day. This is normal.
Thick, yellow drainage for 2 - 3 days is normal.

    What can you do?

  • If your baby is fussy, giving him asprin-free medicine (ex: acetaminophen, Tylenol, or Tempra). Be sure to use medicine as directed for your child's age and weight.
  • Bathe your baby normally. Be sure to keep the penis clean with mild soap and water.
  • Put Vaseline ointment on the penis after bathing or diaper changes. You may want to put a gauze pad over the ointment to keep the diaper from sticking to the penis.

You should call or see the doctor if:

    1. more than a few drops of blood in the diaper.
    2. unusual swelling or redness going down the shaft of the penis.
    3. no wet diaper for 8 hours.
    4. the plastic rim has not fallen off in 10 days.
    5. foul odor or drainage from penis.
