Cuts, Scrapes, and Puncture Wounds

    Immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and water.
  • Put hydrogen peroxide on the wound and dry with a clean cloth.
  • Put antibiotic ointment on the wound.
  • Apply pressure to the area with a clean cloth to stop any bleeding.

    Two times a day:

    1. Clean the wound with soap and water or hydrogen peroxide and dry with a clean cloth.
    2. Put antibiotic ointment on the wound.
    3. Apply a bandage or sterile gauze pad to keep the area clean and dry.

    For mouth cuts:

    3. Give your child cool drinks, like milk or milkshakes.

    Call your child's doctor if:

      1. pus
      2. redness
      3. increasing pain or tenderness
      4. warmth
      5. swelling
    2. Your child runs a fever (100.4ºF or more).
    3. Your child has not had a tetanus shot in the last 5 years.
    4. You think dirt or other things are inside the cut.
    5. The cut is big or deep enough to need stitches.
    6. There is bleeding that is hard to stop with pressure.
