Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a mild illness caused by a virus (the Coxsackie virus). It is contagious ("catching").

    Signs and symptoms:

  • Bumps and blisters on palms of hands and soles of feet
  • White blisters in mouth
  • Pimple-like lesions on bottom, knees, and elbows
  • Fever

    How is it treated?

    • There is no medicine to cure hand, foot, and mouth disease.

    What can you do?

    • Give your child fluids to drink.
    • Administer aspirin-free medicine (Tylenol or Tempra) for fever. Be sure to use medicine as directed for your child's age and weight.
    • Keep your child inside and away from others as long as he or she has fever.

You should call or see the doctor if:

    • Your child shows signs of dehydration - dry skin, dry mouth, no tears, no urine.
    • Your child will not drink fluids.
    • Your child runs a fever.
    • Your child seems to be getting weaker or more ill.
