Head Lice

Head lice are tiny insects that live in human hair. They hatch from tiny eggs, called nits, that stick to the base of hairs. Anyone can get lice.

    Signs and symptoms:

  • Itching of the head and back of neck.
  • Tiny, white specks (nits) on the hair shafts. (These do not come off easily. If they do, they are probably just dandruff or hairspray.)

How is it treated?

  • You will find special shampoo just for lice at your drugstore.
  • Wash all combs, hats, towels, and bedding that has come in contact with hair in hot water. You can also get a special insect killer for this at the drugstore.
  • Treat everyone in the house.
  • Let your child's school or daycare know.
  • Only use the medicine that your doctor or pharmacist tells you to use.

It is very important to treat quickly to avoid spreading to others. If you have questions, ask your pharmacist about medicines and shampoos to use.
