Hives

Hives is a common rash. It is usually caused by an allergic reaction to something a child has come into contact with recently.

    Signs and symptoms:

  • Areas of the skin will have raised, red blotches.
  • The blotches itch.

What can you do to relieve the itching?

  • Cool towels on the rash may help.
  • Two cups of baking soda in your child's bath water may help.
  • Give your child diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Be sure to check the package for the right dose for your child's age.

    Call your child's doctor if:

    • The rash keeps returning.
    • Your child runs a high fever (101ºF/38.5ºC or more by mouth).

Take your child to the doctor immediately if you see any of these:

    • Wheezing
    • Lips swelling
    • Trouble breathing or swallowing
    • Blisters on the skin or in the mouth
    • Dizzy or fainting spells
