Growth and Development - Your Infant (0 - 12 months)

During infancy, your baby is learning to trust and feel secure in your care. You can give your child this sense of trust and security by:

  • Taking care of your baby's physical needs, like: hunger, sleep, and clean diapers.
  • Being there for your baby as the one consistent caregiver.
  • Singing, reading, and talking to your baby.

    The first year of your child's life is important in establishing a basic sense of trust, hope, and love.

      Milestones to look for:
      (These are only guidelines. Each child is different, and may do things at different times. If you see your child is 6 months or more behind on any of these skills, talk to your child's doctor.)
      At or about:
        A baby usually:
      Birth - 3 months
        • cries to make needs known
        • knows familiar faces
        • smiles
        • holds heads up when lying on stomach
        • holds objects briefly
        • is aware of strange sounds
        • makes cooing sounds
