Ringworm

Ringworm is an infection of the skin and hair caused by a fungus. This rash is not caused by worms. It can spread from person to person by sharing objects like hats and combs. It can be caught from dogs and cats.

    Signs and symptoms:

  • Ring-like sores on the skin or scalp.
  • Sores that spread.
  • Hair falling out because of sores.
  • Itching.

How to prevent ringworm:

  • Avoid contact with pets or people with ringworm.
  • Treat pets and re-check often.
  • Avoid sharing clothes.
  • Wash hands often.

What can you do?

  • See your doctor. Your child's doctor will suggest a skin medicine to use. Use it for two weeks after the sores disappear. Be sure to use the medicine as directed.
  • Your child may go to school as soon as treatment is started. Do not let him share combs, hats, etc.

Take your child to the doctor if you see signs of infection, like:

    • Pus
    • Redness
    • Tenderness
