Sore Throat

Sore throats are usually caused by a virus or streptococcus (strep throat). When the throat is sore, it may be red. This is called pharyngitis.

    Strep Throat

The doctor finds strep throat by using a throat swab on the back of your child's throat. If your child has strep throat, the doctor will prescribe an antibiotic.

    Virus

Sore throats caused by a virus are not treated with antibiotics. Usually they will get better after a few days.

What can you do for sore throats?

  • Give all of the medicine prescribed by your doctor, if any, until it is gone, even if your child feels better.
  • Keep your child away from others until temperature has been normal for 24 hours. Strep throat is contagious ("catching").
  • Offer your child plenty of fluids.
  • Prepare drinks and food that are cool and soft.
  • Older children can suck on throat lozenges to help the pain. Small children should suck on a popsicle.
  • Avoid hot or spicy foods and acidic drinks like orange juice.
  • Give acetaminophen (Tylenol, Tempra) for pain or fever. Use the proper dose for your child's age and weight.
  • Let your child gargle with warm salt water or Chloraseptic 4 times a day, if they are old enough to gargle.
