Umbilical Hernia

Umbilical hernia happens when the muscles of the wall of the abdomen do not close all the way at the navel area. The muscles usually close by the time a child turns 5 years of age.

The hernia may swell when your child:

  • Cries.
  • Has a full stomach.
  • Strains to have a bowel movement.

This swelling is normal and not dangerous. It should not hurt.

    How is it treated?

    • If the muscles close by the time a child turns 4 - 5 years of age, no treatment is needed.
    • If the hernia does not close on its own, it can be fixed with surgery. Talk to your child's doctor about this.

You should call or see the doctor immediately if:

    • The hernia gets hot or feels very hard when you touch it.
    • The skin over and around the hernia gets red.
    • Your child vomits several times, and the hernia is swollen and will not go back into the abdomen when pushed down.
